Australian fashion designer Rachel Gilbert is the queen of party dresses and she shares her tips.

Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

“I continue to find inspiration from friends, family, at home, overseas – anywhere really. I also have so many fabulous projects, challenges and goals that I want to achieve personally and professionally. So to help keep me focused and motivated on what I want, I have a giant size inspirational board in my office which I add to daily.”

What colours should we look out for this summer?

“This summer it’s about fresh sorbet colours, crisp whites and citrus blends worked back with metallic accessories.”

What three things would you never leave home without?

“My iPhone, Canon camera and Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream.”

Which fashion item is a must-have in everyone's wardrobe?

“Every woman needs a Little Black Dress! It is such a wardrobe staple.”

What are your tips for looking your best during the party season?

“Make sure you get enough sleep, keep hydrated with lots of water in between soirées, exercise and don’t overdo it at a function – with every wine have a glass of a water!”

Which accessories is the most important to making/breaking an outfit?

“Shoes; If you have a killer outfit and you mismatch the shoes, it can turn a great outfit onto its head.

Bag; There is nothing worse than an oversized tote with an elegant outfit, you have to be so particular in picking the right clutch or bag for any look.

Jewellery; I am quite partial to a bit of bling, but sometimes less is more!”

What's been your most embarrassing wardrobe malfunction?

“Arriving to work for a full day of meetings with two different types of ballet flats on! Getting dressed in the mornings when you are in a rush and undecided on shoes can be extremely stressful!”

You've worked with well-known designers including Lisa Ho and Morrissey, what's the best design advice you've ever been given?

“To work hard, set yourself goals and always ask questions when you are in the vicinity of others you are learning from.”

What has been your biggest achievement to date?”

“It would have to be dressing Princess Beatrice in the Zaza Long Dress which was worn to the Pre Wedding Gala Dinner.”

What is your favourite city?

“New York has definitely been my favourite! I lived there for two years and had the most incredible experiences, it just has the best feel about it.”
